Political cartooning has a long past of going after anyone in the public eye.  One of our more famous presidents wasn't immune to this in his era.

His name?  Abraham Lincoln!

Yes, they called him a monkey, the apologist, a manager (instead of a leader) and other derisive names. His decisions speak for themselves fortunately.

From the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield, IL.

While a painting, not a cartoon, one of Lincoln in Richmond after the Confederate surrender, he asked the assembled band to play "Dixie".

"It's good to show the rebels, that with us in power, they will be free to hear it again" he said, to the astonishment of his assistant to his left.
