I seriously have to calculate when someone asks my age. Im 37, but 35-39 seems blurry and all the same. I guess when I hit 40 it might stand out in my brain.

I’m old enough that I can remember standing in my crib looking out at tanks rolling by my window in my American town. They were on maneuvers or parade or just going from one place to another. I also remember my First Communion. You had to fast overnight and I was starved when I was done. My parents decided to watch the 101st Airborne do a practice drop over Camp (now Fort) Campbell. It was exciting – A jeep’s chutes didn’t open and it came down rightside up. All four tires just popped. They changed the tires and drove it off. A small howitzer dropped – its chutes didn’t work either. This one came down barrel first. Luckily all it hit was the ground. There were no serious paratrooper injuries that day – the worst were one got a sprained wrist and another, a sprained ankle. When you consider they were jumping out of C-119 Flying Boxcars at several thousand feet, that was awfully darn good. God was with them that day. I finally got to eat and, Boy, was I happy.

Grow up? BULL SHIT LAKE! I'll grow old but I'll NEVER grow up, if you can't put up with my teenage pranks then turn your head. You earthlings just don't know how to loosen up, things are different in the Klatu Nebula.
The Ancient One has spoken... In case you missed the video my daughters just posted to facebook... A friend and I were doing some urban bobsledding down our staircase on top of an old cardboard box. It was a butt smashing good time except that Sam clothslined himself on his "rollout" under the dining room table! Guess you would call that old enough to know better and young enough not to give a damn.

In my travels I spent a day at an air guard base in Indiana that supported the Army at Fort Campbell sometimes with C-119s. The "dollar nineteen" wasn't a bad airplane. It wasn't as nice as say a C-141 but it worked. On start when the wind was wrong the cabin ventilation picked up the oil smoke from the radials starting up. If you weren't so sure of flying anyway that would give you a little nausea. Then on the ground they didn't have the air-conditioning and like a lot of military aircraft of the period it was hot. It rattled a little and the engines were noisy on the ground. In flight it was still noisy. The cargo deck always seemed to be sloped to the rear in flight. If you weren't used to it the experience was somewhat alien. Then there was the story the flight engineer told me.
He used to have fun with the army paratroopers they'd haul at Fort Campbell. The flight deck is elevated from the cargo bay where the troops. The rookie paratroopers would be in the back wide eyed and not sure of what was about to happen. One of the flight crew would come down the steps and feint sickness and make barfing noises and movements into an air sickness bag previously prepared with say cream of mushroom soup. He’d then set the bag down on the steps and go back up to the flight deck. Usually the troopers in the front were watching every move from the flight deck. Then another flight crew member would come down the steps, set down and pick up the bag. He’d look into the bag, lick his lips, pull out a spoon from the sleeve pocket and eat the soup from the bag………………. This usually got a reaction from the paratroops. Many would take off their helmets and get sick into the helmet. At that point the flight crew member, having accomplished his mission, would retreat to the flight deck. At that point the ready light would come on and the jump master would have the paratroopers stand up and get ready to jump. ……………………….. This would, of course, include putting on their helmets.

Talking about C-119’s, AC-119 gunships were assigned to Nakhon Phanom RTAFB when I was there, but I didn’t get to ride on any. Military personnel can sometimes “hop” or travel, for free, on military aircraft as passengers. I think I remember doing that once on a C-119 which had landed at Ellsworth AFB, SD, and was headed for Dover AFB, DE.
I got to ride on the flight deck. The clouds and fog were so bad that the crew was considering going to the alternate – either Denver or Omaha – but the Lt Col aircraft commander was pretty sure he could find Wright Patterson AFB, Dayton, OH, the base where he had planned to land – without backtracking. Ellsworth, our base of origin, was also socked in by this time.
Now thinking about it, I don’t really know how much of what went on was for my benefit – flight crew playing tricks on a relatively young passenger – but it sure seemed real at the time.
Anyway, when we got there, the Lt Col asked his copilot to look for a particular light formation on the ground so he could land. He found it and we went down. All I could see was swirling fog.
We touched down and were taxiing when the crew suddenly put on the brakes and stopped. We got out and about 75-100 feet directly in front of us was a parked double-decker C-124 Globemaster (http://www.globalaircraft.org/planes/c-124_globemaster_ii.pl). Had we continued, we would have run into it.
We got back in the C-119 and the pilot called the tower and asked for transportation. He gave a general location and they came out and found us. We just left the plane where it sat and someone else parked it later. I continued on to Dover with the crew a day or so later. I think I ended up taking a bus from Delaware down to Pennsylvania where my family lived at the time. This was in the early 1960’s.

I detect some youthfull sarcasm.
Here is an example. I understand the comment emphasis on the downtown "bar district" now more than before. If you are in the 21 to 35 age range you likely care more about the bar district and singles scene than the 60 year old.

Very fair to say, Overstreet. I respect all of the older posters on this site, but I have just run into a few too many bogus statistics or incorrect conclusions lately.
The local radio stations are the worst offenders. A little while back they had a segment based on a survey that said "40% of men who cheat drive nice cars". They warned the wives or girlfriends of men with nice cars that their husbands might be cheaters. I dialed the number, but hung up before I could weigh in on the subject because I was still too heated. 40% drive nice cars? Well 60% drive crappy cars!!!!

Amen! When I was 16, my parents were idiots without a clue! By the time I was 26 they had really gotten much smarter and more knowledgeable. By the time I was 35 they were wise sages to whom I looked for guidance on most things.

To me ......age is just a set of numbers! Can be young or can be old, it doesn't matter! What is between ones ears and how well tis used is the heart of the matter!

Hell I'm 45 and I feel like I just graduated high school. But I sure would trade places with anyone I know. 3 ways to stay young 1) marry well ( I knocked that one out of the ballpark) 2) Live somewhere that makes you happy to go home everyday (for me that is Avondale) 3) for god's sake get a kayak, and use it.... alot.

Looks like my group (55) is pretty quiet here, most of 'em learned when to shut up. Have to agree with the kayak comment - I think the pretty side of Florida is next to water.We just finished building our yaks and are spending all our free time in them. Still some solitude to be had out there too. Y'all get some.

I like that. By that measure I'm 26, and my two children were born two years and seven years before I was.
Maybe the reason why I like the JTA PCT trolleys so much is that I can ride them for free.

Looks like the majority of our readers are in the 26-35 range which means we have a lot of young(ish) residents very interested in our city and her future. I'd say that bodes very well for the River City.

Buckethead.. :) And yea, aging is kind of scary Ock. We older persons know that the time might come when our minds will deteriorate at a rate faster than our bodies. I have for decades observed some older people who think and speak with obvious limitations, and then try to imagine how these people might have acted and talked when they were twenty years old. Surely they must have acted with quick decisions and energetic thoughts and speech.
As most realize however, whereas some individuals begin to show mental deficiencies in their sixties, some seem never to show them, even into their nineties, although perhaps they slow somewhat in their spontaneous vigor.
I suspect that although physiological deterioration of the brain cells and synaptic integrity can be a major cause of brain dysfunction, and therefore mental deterioration, the additional factor giving choice as to the overall condition of an older person’s mind is that of practice or use. If one habitually uses and exercises his or her brain, exploring ideas and analyzing possibilities into their nineties, then their mind might function quite well into the nineties and beyond.
The realization that one’s thinking ability is a consequence of the integrity and function of one’s physical brain is a little scary to me, as logic informs me that when the physiology of the brain begins to decline, the quality of thought declines also, and there is nothing one can do about it. I suspect that as age extends, one’s thinking becomes cloudy, as when one is drunk, or when one has been given a drug in a hospital. Most of us desire clarity of thought as we engage the world.
The fact of being solely a physical being, which happens to be my belief; that there is no possibility of any assistance or engagement with anything supernatural in the world beyond my physical body is somewhat depressing, as I know that there is no hope for assistance from anything in the universe but within my own brain.
According to my view, and this might be the position of many atheists, we are indeed alone in the universe, each one of us. There is nobody to pull us through but ourselves. Although this realization might make us more independent and self-reliant, it is taxing and wearisome, as one realizes that there is nobody to rely upon for help or comfort, as would be the case if one believed in spiritual entities nearby, or somewhere.
Therefore in some respects I envy the religious persons because they are able to experience comfort from something outside of themselves, whereas the atheist is alone in the universe. But of course, there must be comfort and balance within each mind, else it would crumble, so the atheist must gain comfort and balance in by some method of thinking.
But perhaps there can be reasonable happiness at all times, even when one’s mental flexibility has deteriorated. After all, the chimp seems to be happy. Dogs and elephants too. Perhaps as one’s level of thinking deteriorates, one simply becomes more like an animal, able to think only to certain depths, all the while maintaining the balance necessary to live day to day.
So, yes Ock… long live our brains, as the brain is really all we have, and what we are.
