This is a much more common problem than most folks realize, and there is no cure.  There is no effective treatment, and no effective test for it.  This needs much more attention, funding and research.  Florida has a huge population of deer, and other vectors, that makes it easy for them to breed.  We find ticks about once per week, sometimes more in warm weather.  (I'm in Tallahassee, in a wooded area of town.)
