Postal roads and defense are constitutionally mandated.

(Not necessarily the behemoth road system we have, however.)

No, those things are provided by government and paid for with taxes and borrowing.  If we ever go to single payer then health care will be like those things.

I see the distinction but I don't see how that distinction is important.

On a side note I like when the cartoons spur conversation. I am just not sure what the proper way is to navigate those conversations to another thread so we don't gum up the works here.

No, those things are provided by government and paid for with taxes and borrowing.  If we ever go to single payer then health care will be like those things.

The case in the Supreme Court will be about federalism (full disclosure: I am not a constitutional lawyer or even a college grad, for that matter).  I believe Mass already mandates health insurance.  Is the power to do it at the federal level in the Constitution?  If not, the 10th amendment reserves it to the states or the people.  Does it matter what level of government mandates something?  I think so.  If the people of Mass don't like it they only have to go as far as Boston to express their displeasure to those that mandated it.
